Canon 10D 28mm, f2.8, 1/350, ISO 200
Markham rightly said in the comments for my last portrait that I needed to mix things up a bit. Thank you for that Markham because this is one of my favourites so far. I teach a couple of times a week in the IADT (Institute of Art, Design and Technology) and when I went there today I only packed my 28mm lens rather than my 85mm which I’ve been using up until now so I had to find a new way of taking a portrait. I was walking across the Quadrangle on my way to the canteen when I spotted someone in one of the windows. The framing and the reflections jumped at me and I went in and asked if I could take his photograph. The lovely thing about being in an art college is that nobody bats an eyelid or looks at you like you’re crazy when you say you’re doing a personal photography project. It’s more like…”Oh, you too then?”

Love it!
Great stuff so far – i love this project.
You should really head up to the Dail for a day or two…not too many shy folk there either.
Claire,
Great shot, and yes a good idea to challenge yourself somewhat. Previous portraits are all very good too, but it’s refreshing to see a different take on the subject. There’s another great photography show on TV at the moment (you probably catch all these anyway), called ‘Picture This’. Format is a bit cheesy, it’s like ‘X-Factor’ for photographers, but the input form the judges is interesting (especially Martin Parr, a hero of mine) also the way the hopeful photographers go about it. Flickr also seem to be involved with this project, interesting to see that they sponsor the show. They appear to have based this on a similar show in the USA.
I recently saw the last two episodes of ‘The Genius of Photography’ some great stuff on that show, they really went in deep on many of the subjects.
Did you see my night-time snow shots on my Flickr gallery yet?
I’m just getting into that now that I can export directly from Lightroom.
Cheers.
I have been following this campaign since you started it, and this by far is the best shot yet, absolutely fantastic. You could make qite a bit of money from this photo if you really wanted too.
Brilliant.
Yay, Markham, I’m glad you like it and thanks for the suggestion 🙂
John, that’s not a bad idea, I was recently photographing an event where some local politicians were in attendance and it made me chuckle that they were always aware of where the camera was and made sure to angle themselves and pose themselves so as to give me a good shot. Everyone else is either unaware that I’m shooting or if they are they try and hide.
Davy, I’ve been watching Picture This and also there are little 3 minute shows just before the news I think that follow a professional photographer doing their thing. There was one on a fashion photographer the other night and she has her subjects run around in front of the camera until they’re out of breath before she takes their photo. That way they’re loose and less self-conscious. Pretty good tip I think! I’ve just been looking at your snow shots on Flickr, you guys are so lucky that you got some snow to shoot! It looks so lonely and quiet, you captured a lovely atmosphere.
Thanks John M, I’m glad you like it. Usually my favourites are the ones that nobody else likes. I’m just waiting for the rain to clear so I can go out and try and grab my shot for today!
Ooh, really like this one! Very different not only in composition but in post-production. I really do love the others as well though – it’s a great project idea, it must be quite tough and daunting but you’re doing a brilliant job.
Thanks Nathalie, it’s getting a little bit easier as time goes on. Hopefully I’ll get to the stage where I won’t be so nervous asking people.
Such an intriguing portrait. This one is my favorite from your series so far.
Hi Kimberly, I think this is my favourite too. I’ve been falling behind this last week, I need to get back on track!
Great shot – love to see the water bottle photoshopped out though… 🙂
Really? I thought about cloning it out but then I thought it kind of fits in with the blue/green colours. I might have to do a before and after and see which one I prefer.
