Forest Path
Canon 10D, 38mm, f4, 1/60, ISO 100

This final photo from last week is a little different from my usual style. I used what’s known as the Orton Effect to get the dreamy look. The jury’s still out for me on this shot, I’m not sure why…maybe it’s a little too chocolate box-y? Still it’s fun to do and in my opinion works best on shots of landscapes rather than people. There are many different ways to get this effect as a google search will show you but you can find a good tutorial at this link.

I really like it, but then I’m a sucker for that sort of look. It reminds me of Hansel and Gretel.

By the way, when I clicked on the image to see it close up and big, I got an error on flicker that it’s a private page.

I think it’s growing on me, after seeing how Michael Orton applies it himself, I love how he uses it.

Ann, thanks for the heads-up, I had marked the photo private and forgotten to change it. It’s fixed now!

Just spotting your article now as I had commented on your Flickr version.

It’s definitely not chocolate-boxy, Claire. It’s a very special and dreamy image and beautifully handled. I learned Orton myself from a Dutch Flickr guy and it certainly is ideal for forests like this. It also evokes emotions – as all great photographs should.

Clair,

I like it! Alot! Makes me think of something out of pans labrinth. Perhaps what skyridge should have been. Hope you are very well.

C.

Thanks for the comments everyone 🙂

John, I agree that it’s best for shots of nature and landscapes and photos that you want to evoke a bit of a mood from.

Hey Charles! So you liked Pan’s Labyrinth too then? I’m going to have to see this film because so many people have said good things about it.

I never knew of this effect, its really cool, and the picture looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing the URL for the tutorial. Your blog is slowly becoming a pandoras box for tutorials. Can you get a Ansel Adams tutorial next???

Haha, an Ansel Adams tutorial…now that would be cool! I promise if I ever find one you’ll be the first to know 😀

Orton effect on a bridge at Glendalough…

Claire Wilson also known as Gingerpixel put up a photograph recently which really inspired me. What she had done was take a photograph in a forest and apply an effect created by a photographer called Michael Orton and unsurprisingly called……
