**Geeky camera post alert**
This is the latest addition to my lens family which arrived today, a 28mm 1.8 from Canon. I’ve become a bit of a prime lens addict (sorry to go all geeky…a prime lens in case you don’t know is one that has a fixed focal length, so, in other words not a zoom). They’re just so much sharper and they make my lazy self actually think about where I need to be standing for different shots rather than relying on zooming. Plus you can get a very fast lens (1.8 in this case) for low light without breaking the bank. To get a zoom lens which allows you to shoot at f1.8 can cost into the thousands whereas this lens only set me back a few hundred from eBay.
I’ve been testing the new lens out on Eve (my long-suffering model) and so far I’m very happy with the results. My justification for buying it is that in a couple of weeks I’ve been asked to photograph a four day event for the Mayo County Enterprise Board. I’ve been told that the the four venues are quite dark hotel conference rooms and my preference is to avoid shooting with flash so this lens is going to come in very handy indeed:

I’ve had my finger hovering over “buy it now” on a couple of f1.8 Nikkor lenses recently, but still, alas, no prime lens lovin’ for me.
And you can’t get one with auto-focus for a D40 anyway. Dunno if that would matter though.
I don’t think you can go far wrong with a 1.8 prime lens, do it, do it 😉
Hmm, I do tend to take autofocus for granted, I suppose it would be just a matter of adapting but I can imagine I’d miss a lot of shots until I got used to it.
I’ve just started my photography class this week, and I got so excited right now when I understood all of your lens terms! Yay for me! Good luck with that upcoming event, and those pictures of Eve are great, as usual 🙂
Haha! I’m really glad you’re getting to take that class Angelina. I can’t wait to see some photos. Of course, this might mean you get as addicted to the gear as I am, instead of shoes it’ll be lenses from now on!
Just added a 60mm macro 2.8 to the arsenal. Yum. Prime lenses rock.
Nice Markham, I’ve never had a macro lens although there’s a 100mm one that is very tempting.
So fun to play with – check out the flower pics on my site.
As for AF – I rarely use it, particularly when the aperture’s wide open and you’re playing with narrow depth of field.
Love your pics!
