Chocolate Love Fest

Chocolate Heaven
Canon 10D, 17mm, f4, 1/180, ISO 100

The icing on the cake of a pretty amazing weekend was getting to be a judge at the Chocolate Love Fest in the Happy Pear on Sunday. I know I’ve mentioned the Pear before but it really is a special place and they’re always organising cool things like this. People were invited to bring along their best chocolate creations and there was a table set outside where we could all sample the results.

Some of the other judges. We took our job very seriously:

It started off fairly tame but I guess the judging took too long for the rest of the crowd. Before too long we were surrounded:

Well, they were pretty delicious:

My Grandparent’s House

Dishes
Canon 10D 28mm, f1.8, 1/125, ISO 200

The day after my DaDa passed away I went to his house to take photographs. It might sound a little morbid but this house is something very special in my family. My grandparent’s lived there for their whole married life, and it was my great-grandparent’s house before that. My mother was born in their bedroom upstairs and so were her two brothers and two sisters. For as long as I can remember it was the hub of our extended family…Christmas, New Years, summertime, Sunday dinners…it all happened there. So, now that it’s to be sold and passed on to become a part of somebody else’s family history, I wanted to try and capture something of it. I spent nearly two hours photographing everything I could think of and my plan is to create a book with all the photographs. Something to keep and remember.

In the meantime (the book is taking me awhile to put together) I thought I might share just a couple of shots. These are a few that I took in the old kitchen of the house including my NaNa’s old recipe book stuffed full of recipes she’d torn from magazines and many more in her own handwriting. Grannymar I thought of you when I found these and made sure to take photographs of the handwritten ones!

That Food’s Not For Eating

“You ponce in here expecting to be waited on hand and foot, while I’m trying to run a hotel here. Have you any idea of how much there is to do? Do you ever think of that? Of course not, you’re all too busy sticking your noses into every corner, poking around for things to complain about, aren’t you? Well let me tell you something – this is exactly how Nazi Germany started. A lot of layabouts with nothing better to do than to cause trouble.” — Basil Fawlty

I’ve been reading a lot of books on business and marketing lately (now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d ever say!). I’m like a lot people who do something creative for money…we hate the business side (or look down our noses at it as if it’s something dirty) but if we don’t treat it as a business then we’re just starving artists and that’s no fun. Recent books that I’ve been reading are Love Is The Killer App, Selling The Invisible and even the old favourite, How To Win Friends And Influence People. Now generally I don’t admit to reading these…for some reason I’ve always regarded them as one small step away from self-help books (or recycled common sense). But I’ve had to concede that they do have some excellent points.

Take for example Friday evening. My family had just attended the removal of my Grandfather at Dun Laoghaire church and we all headed over to a local hotel for a drink and some time together. There was a tab at the bar for drinks but as it was 6pm and there were menus on the tables we all decided to order food. The food was really nice, if a little pricey, and we had a good night. It did take awhile for the food to arrive though so by 10pm I was ready to go home. I popped over to the bar to ask if I could pay for my meal. The barman said he needed to ask the manager and when he called him over the manager launched into a little rant about us having ordered the food in the first place. “If you people would have told us you were going to have food as well as drink we might have been better prepared. You only told us you were having a drink and now you all want to come down and pay individually….! It’s just too confusing. You’ll just have to wait for me to figure this out.” I was a little taken aback, was he really giving out to me because not only were we buying drinks at his bar, but we’d also taken them up on their menus and bought food too? Was he annoyed because we were spending more money then he’d originally planned? So, knowing that we’d all just been at a family funeral, he berates me for wanting to pay my bill. Yikes, I guess I won’t make that mistake again.

It didn’t make me angry at all, I was more bemused by the whole thing. He had a perfect opportunity to garner some goodwill with a whole roomful of customers. People who were having a good time and would be perfect for spreading the word about what his bar had to offer. Instead, with a few angry sentences he killed it all dead. I suppose if I was looking for a perfect example that illustrated everything I’ve been reading about, this was definitely it.

One good thing, (and why I’m not going to put the name of the hotel into the post to show up on google) when we were back there the next day after the main funeral, Matt (who wasn’t as amused by the whole thing as I was) said something to the hotel manager, he immediately sat down with him and heard his complaint. He didn’t argue or make excuses but instead apologised profusely. In fact, everyone we met the next day was lovely and I’m willing to say I probably caught that guy on a bad day. Still, it isn’t often that you get that second chance.

See You Later DaDa

See You Later DaDa

My DaDa passed away last night. He’d been in hospital since just after Christmas so we all knew it was coming but, looking at this photograph and knowing the mischief that’s in those eyes, I still find it all a little difficult to take in. I don’t really know what else to say, but his photographs were so well received when I posted them here and on Damien’s blog I just felt like I should tell you all.

5 Post Meme

Grannymar tagged me a week or more back and I’ve been dipping in and out of choosing my posts ever since. So, after trawling through the basement of the blog…

The Rules:
Post 5 links to 5 of your previously written posts. The posts have to relate to the 5 key words given here (family, friend, yourself, your love, anything you like).
Tag 5 other friends to do this meme. Try to tag at least 2 new acquaintances (if not, your current blog buddies will do) so that you get to know them each a little bit better.
Don’t forget to read the archived post and leave comments.

1. Family. I didn’t have to go back too far for this one. It’s the entry I posted about my DaDa’s birthday party back in October. My DaDa hasn’t been too well lately, he’s been in hospital since Christmas, so it’s nice to look back on his big night out.

2. Friend. For this one I’ve chosen my post about my time in Mexico. That was over a decade ago but the friends I made around that time are still some of the best friends I have. When we talk, even after a very long time, it’s like we saw each other only yesterday. There’s talk of a reunion next year…I really hope it happens!

3. Yourself. Oh boy, this one is embarrassing but it’s good to keep me humble. I posted this nearly two years ago when I found a stash of my old diaries during a clean out at my parent’s house. Cringe!

4. Your Love. Doing this meme made me realise I don’t blog all that much about my husband (or most of the people in my life…I think it’s a privacy thing). For me a picture says things way better than prose though and I love this one of both my loves.

5. Anything You Like. Hmm, I think my favourite post (or group of posts) are the ones I did of the old Fox House in Greystones. I wish that I could find more places like this. When I was over in Mayo in September I saw so many great old houses and farms, but I don’t see them over this way so often. That’s why I loved exploring this one.

Thanks Grannymar that was fun! I don’t think I’ll tag anyone though, I need to go and get some sleep now!
