Anti-Workshop Day 1: Elvis!

ElvisPolaroids

Well, finally I’ve grabbed a few moments to upload some photos of what I’ve been doing this week. Today was the last full day of the anti-workshop and it has been an absolutely amazing experience for me. I have felt like a sponge for the past few days trying to soak up as much information as I possibly can, furiously taking notes and attempting to cram everything into my poor brain. Every night I’ve fallen into my bed wrung out and exhausted but in a very good way. I won’t blog everything at once so for this post I’ll just show what we did on the first day of the workshop.

After a morning spent talking about looking at all kinds of art to inspire and inform our photography, we were split into groups of 5, given a life-size cardboard cut-out of Elvis a polaroid camera and sent out onto the streets of downtown Las Vegas with the challenge to come up with a concept and execute it using only ten images. We had only 90 minutes and 2 packs of film to work with. Our team worked so well together. So many times you do something like this and there are strong personalities who butt against each other or take over. We all seemed to be quite evenly matched and we had a great time. It was a brilliant exercise because it forced us to think beyond camera settings or lens choices and just get good pictures that told a story. We chose the theme of the contrast between Elvis at his height and at his lowest. It sounds all deep but we just had fun.

You can see our images here in this post. All of them were taken within a radius of about 4 blocks in the downtown area which is a colourful part of town to say the least. The shot in the bathroom was taken in the not very pleasant motel room of a guy who we spotted at a motel pool, I was standing in my bare feet on his toilet seat while Jen, one of the other girls on the team sat with her feet up on the bath. The one with Elvis standing in the street has an ambulance in the background that was working on a guy laid out on the sidewalk. The sportscar belonged to a guy with greased backed hair, wearing leather pants and gold jewelery…his girlfriend is in the front seat. The final one was when we set fire to Elvis which we did down an alley…just as he was blazing nicely we were spotted by some security across the road and we had to run for it. Definitely a fun first day! Tomorrow morning we’re off to the Neon Graveyard for the final part of the workshop, I’m so sad that it’s nearly over!

Made It!

It took 23 hours and it wasn’t completely smooth (lost my luggage for a day) but it was still pretty good. For one thing, even with a delay leaving Dublin of an hour, I still made my connection in Atlanta and that was the main thing I was worrying about.

Las Vegas is a sensory overload…right now I’m sitting in the lobby of my hotel and I’m surrounded by flashing lights, beeps and bells. Anywhere with the smallest amount of space has a slot machine squeezed into it. The workshop doesn’t start until this evening so I took the day to go catch a bus and see a bit of the town. The casinos are amazing but what’s struck me most is the amount of run-down, decayed old buildings you see butted up next to these enormous gleaming towers.

I’m in character heaven though…the little old ladies with the buckets of coins, the old guys with cowboy hats on their motorbikes, the tourists…but I’ve not taken any photos just yet. I think it would take a whole new level of courage for me to ask for portraits here!

Airport Advice Anyone?

So, I’m heading off to Las Vegas on Monday for the anti-workshop and the WPPI convention. I’m running around like the proverbial chicken trying to get myself organised (of course, it always comes down to the last minute!). I’ve not flown to the States in over ten years and I know a lot has changed since then, plus I have only a small layover in Atlanta before my connection flight to Las Vegas so time is going to be tight. So…can anyone give me some advice. If you’ve flown recently can you give me any tips to help everything run smoothly for me through the security checks in particular? I’m going to have a laptop and camera equipment to get through so I’m particularly nervous about that. One thing I did discover through a bit of internet searching is that my camera batteries (being lithium batteries) CAN’T go in my suitcase, they have to be in carry on. Is there anything else I should know?

Chocolate Love Fest

Chocolate Heaven
Canon 10D, 17mm, f4, 1/180, ISO 100

The icing on the cake of a pretty amazing weekend was getting to be a judge at the Chocolate Love Fest in the Happy Pear on Sunday. I know I’ve mentioned the Pear before but it really is a special place and they’re always organising cool things like this. People were invited to bring along their best chocolate creations and there was a table set outside where we could all sample the results.

Some of the other judges. We took our job very seriously:

It started off fairly tame but I guess the judging took too long for the rest of the crowd. Before too long we were surrounded:

Well, they were pretty delicious:

PhotoWalk

On Saturday afternoon, before the ladies tea party, I went on my very first photowalk. I can’t believe I’ve never been along to one before because it was a great laugh. Mind you, I didn’t really take that many photos, I was far too busy chatting and the weather meant we were forced (twisted arms you understand) into O’Donoghues for a drink or three. You can’t really blame me though, surrounded by lovely people like Redmum (who organised it all!), Elly, Phil, Andy, Keith, Ryan, John, Owen and Sandy (who joined us in the pub). We definitely need to do it again sometime!

Here’s a few that I did get:
