Yes, these two may look all cute and cuddly and butter-wouldn’t-melt and all (that is if you like cats, for you cat-haters out there I apologise for being someone who blogs about their pets) but I’m just about ready to string them up. Don’t tell my landlord but they will not stop weeing in the house. Lately my morning routine starts with a mop and bucket and every manner of strong-smelling detergent but I’m afraid the place now has that permanent underlying tang of cat pee usually associated with crazy cat-ladies.
It doesn’t help that a leftover from my pregnancy is a superhuman sense of smell, so I can’t get it out of my nose and I wander around sniffing and asking Matt, “Can’t you smell that?” “Now, over here, it’s definitely stronger here.” and generally driving him around the bend with my obsession.
This is not a new problem, it’s just gotten worse. They started when we first moved house a few years ago and there was some upheaval and stress for them. Murphy would do it more, tending to favour a spot at the front door. I did a lot of reading up on ways and methods of getting them to stop and it seems it’s not easy to retrain a cat. I did manage to get them to stop though ***sensitive cat-lovers look away now*** thanks to this wonderful static-electric mat I found on the internet. It was also a good way to wake us up if we came downstairs barefoot half-asleep in the morning and accidentally stood on it.
Unfortunately their weeing in this house isn’t confined to one spot, they’ve branched out. They’re equal opportunity spritzers these days and the smell is almost impossible to get out. There are cleaning products out there that will get rid of it but they’re not available in Ireland and no suppliers I’ve spoken to will ship them to me.
I absolutely loathe litter trays and I can’t have one in the house because of Eve. A cat flap isn’t possible since we’re only renting here. So I’m out of ideas. Besides, right now I think they’re actually coming into the house in order to pee.

You know, I’m not even going to try to give you advice on this because it’s not like there aren’t 492,000 websites out there with 2.6 million suggestions that may or may not work for you, lol! Actually I was INSANELY lucky with my pup. Aside from the first couple of weeks I’ve not really had a problem with him being housebroken. This has, however, made me absolutely terrified to ever get another dog for fear that it will be the devil incarnate just to get back at me for my luck with this first little guy!
Im going to try that on my kids, keep them out of the fridge.
Angela, welcome back 🙂 Yes you have been lucky with little Jack, although I think puppies are easier to train than cats since cats could care less what you think of them!
Killjoy, it worked on my husband 😉
Did you find a way to stop your cats weeing in the house. One cat (the mad burmese) has begun to wee on my bed, she has never done this before but i think she is afraid of a cat who comes in the cat flap at night and has taken to sleeping in my bedroom. One other thought i had was that i have been using a lavender scented pillow spray from the White Company, could that stimulate the cat to urinate?? Let me know if you found any way to deter them and i could try it in my bedroom. ps gorgeous cats by the way
Funny you should talk about pregnancy and babies … One of our two cats has taken to peeing on our Duvet and my wife is pregnant. He did it last time she was preggers also. Its cheaper here to buy a duvet than wash it, so I’ve been buying new ones, but four on and I’m starting to get really p’eed off. How do you stop the buggers? I love the old fella, but he just randomly decides to let loose with his bladder on our bedding!!! Advise would be well welcome. I caught him tonight and scared the bejeebers out of him. Not sure if this will do the trick … bless him!!!
Hi Tim, congratulations to you and your wife 🙂
To be honest, I think once they get the notion in their heads that somewhere is a spot for going to the toilet then it’s pretty much impossible to get them to change their minds. At least that’s what I’ve read and my experience would go along with it. Our solution has been to keep them away from the chosen spot by closing the door to that room all the time. We’ve not had any incidences in a long time now thank goodness and I think the reason is we make sure to give them plenty of outside time.
Since it started with the pregnancy, perhaps once the baby is born the weeing will stop. Good luck!
Yeah we have had a rescue cat for just over a year and he has just started to wee in two places one by the bin and the other in my shoes which is realy nice as i have smeely feet anyway LOL, i think this has all started because a cat came through the flap and he had a little fight with him, could the old man be marking his territory although the amount of wee could sink a battle ship, my thoughts are with you all in this long and hard struggle
Hi there
I have cats, and even though i love them to bits they are a pain in the ass!
One has taken to weeing by the front door (nice smell for visitors) one other has chosen my sofa (which is even nicer for visitors!!)
They are outdoor cats and even though I have two litter trays they still head for their favourite spots.
I have been looking for people with similar problems, citrus smells or pepper I have been informed will keep them away from their favourite weeing places, so I’m going to give it a go lol.
In the hope they dont find another place to pee that is. :-/
i have been informed citronella works. we moved 4 months ago and our moggy has started to pee on our brand spanking new carpet in our brand spanking new house! great !!! so im off to the shops to buy some sort of citronella product to give it a try .
Good luck with that Louise, there’s nothing worse then when cats decide they need to christen a brand new carpet. I’ll have to remember to try citronella.
it does not matter what you do for cats one will be an exception to the rule and it will be the one you own.
i do not mean to rain on your parade but it will! be the one that you own. we have 20 cats and they break all the rules. what the f…. is it with sharon” and cats. les
My cat, coco has recently started weeing on my bed. Oh yes the smell is harendouse. i have tried the deoderiser, it doesnt stop him from weeing on my bed, or eliminate the smell. Iv recently been on the web where i found an artical that suggested using surgical spirit, which is supposed to clean and eliminate odours. So my house smells like a hospital at the moment, but hopefully it work. Only time will tell!
My first cat years ago had this problem! I couldn’t ever sort it out, I talked to so many people about what I could do and no one had any ideas. Eventually the cat stopped doing it but geeze does cat urine smell!
I don’t have cats!
Believe me the best way to solve the cat misbehaving is to clean up the pee with Vinegar or lemon juice. Most people clean with bleach which contains an ingredient similar to the pee so the cat returns to the same spot to do the same again.
The vinegar stings the eyes of the cat BUT does no harm. It is the best deterrant when training either cats or dogs. I watched my sister use this method to good effect. Get a small bottle with a spray nozzle and half fill it with Vinegar. After a few days dilute the spray with water. The cat has the idea by then. I in fact used this idea to stop her Sheltie constantly barking. After a week making the noise of the spray and pretending to spray was enough!
Thanks Grannymar, I took your advice and tried spraying the front door with vinegar last night (they drive us mad scratching at the door to come in all night and then 10 mins later they want out again) and it worked! Next to try it on their other favourite “areas”.
That’s alright, my cat has just started to target my guests bed for some odd reason.
