Canon 10D 28mm, f2, 1/350, ISO 100
I was in Cork over the weekend so I could take some photos of Diarmuid’s family. It was freezing so they were really good sports about going out and allowing me to take the photos outdoors. Especially Diarmuid who had been promised a ride on the digger and was very excited about it 😀

I really like this one!
Lovely shot with the parents in background.
There you go with that nice big aperture lens again, all right, all right I’ll buy one…
– happy now?
😉
Yay, a convert. I figure if I can’t spend my own money on new lenses then persuading someone else to spend theirs is the next best thing 😀
Money Spent! – Your mission is complete.
If I’m lucky this will arrive by weekend. Dunno about you but once I start researching lenses on the web time just flies by – and I find myself dreaming of the biggest, baddest widest aperture lens available, until I see the price tag.
These prime 50mms are so insanely cheap it makes sense to just get one for doing portrait shots anyway.
Even the Nikon 50mm 1.4 was only £185. Only works like this on my ‘DX sensor’ D200 though, on a full-frame this would be back to a regular 50mm, which I would not have a great deal of use for.
Next lens for me would be the 12-24mm Nikon or Tokina, or the 10-20mm Sigma, back to the mediocre max F4 though for those, at my price range anyway.
Will try and get some willing victims for portraits when I get the chance, looking forward to seeing what this lens is capable of.
Have you seen these yet?

On sale at the moment too, what were you saying about spending other folks’ money?…
I do spend way too much time looking at camera stuff. Other women may go mad over shoes and handbags but I’m a lens girl 😀
The 50mm is a very good choice. In fact, when I was doing the shots of the newborn last week that was one lens I was thinking I could have used. My 85mm was just a little too close-up and the 28mm has the distortion that wasn’t quite the effect I wanted. See, I’m already talking myself into spending more money.
Oh, and yes, I love the shootsacs! Handbags AND cameras lol. Jessica Claire, the photographer who designed them is one of my photography heroes and I’m hoping that I can work up the courage to say hello to her in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks.
Ha, some ladies’ shoe buying can be way over the cost of a lens, from a man who lives with wife and two grown-up daughters…
Yes, the 50mm makes an ideal portrait lens on the smaller sensor, an 85mm works out about 110mm? – might be a tad long, although it seems a wonderful lens.
I thought the 18-200 lens I bought (truly a marvellous lens, hand-holdable at 1/8th in VR mode) would cover most of my needs, and it does, but there are always situations where a specialist lens makes like a lot easier, and it is impossible to get that wonderful level of selective focus at f3.5
Shootsacs are a great idea, although I did think they were a little feminine, now you’ve confirmed it!
Wonder if I can get away with the ‘macho’ black one? Think a slingbag would better suit me though.
Do say hello to Jessica, courage be damned – life is short.
I introduced myself to Adrian Shaunessy (designer hero of mine) at a recent talk in the Art College. We had a great chat and, to my surprise, he was a very amicable and funny guy (unlike his reputation as a writer and his book jacket photo). His enthusiasm for design, at all levels was inspiring. And to think that I considered not speaking to him because I might be ‘bothering’ him!
So go for it I say, get as much out of your trip as possible
Enjoy!
Hey, aren’t lenses cheaper in the US?…
😉
Hi there,
Diarmuid is my sons best friend and I can’t believe how well you’ve captured him Claire! He’s an adorable boy and his smile really is that fantastic! I can’t wait to see the other shots.
I love your style. I was sorry to read about your grandad but the photo of him is probably the most complimentary to your talent and reflects the lovely relationship you obviously had with him. He looks so happy to be there with you in the moment.
On the lens’ being cheaper in the US…..definitely. Went with a photographer friend in October (I’m not a photographer, just wish I was!) and she bought a LOT of stuff in ADORAMA in New York. The staff couldn’t be more helpful to her and she believes she would have paid at least double for the items she bought, had she purchased here in Ireland.
Mimi.
Hi Mimi, thanks so much, he really is adorable and so are his brother and sister, I had a good time with them all 🙂
I’m going to have to be very careful I don’t go crazy in the States, it’s going to be very tempting. I am going to Vegas though so maybe I’ll win a fortune at the casinos and then I can spend it on lenses!! LOL, I can dream I guess.
Hey Davy, I’ve seen some very manly photography guys sporting shootsacs…you’d get away with a cool black one no problem 😉
Sentimental and nostalgic. Great.
Your work is marvelous!!
