The Smithfield area in Dublin City has been given a huge facelift, hundreds of new apartments and office blocks have been built and the whole place looks very modern but it’s a little like an island. All around it there are these old, rundown buildings, pubs and shops. I’m enjoying using my lunchbreaks to go out and explore.

Nice shot, did you do much to the colours on this?
I have fond memories of some of the more run-down areas of Dublin, particularly a lovely doorstep sandwich washed down with lashings of draught Guinness in Slattery’s bar (back in 1976 I think).

Thought you’d like to know my new (cheapo)lens just arrived, bought it from Simply Electronics Amazon store, great prompt service and good prices too.

I must say for such a cheap lens this looks very well-made (as I would expect from Nikon), it looks like a little jewel mounted on the front of my big industrial-looking D200.
Nice to have a 1.8 available, the difference in light gathering is amazing (way faster shutter speeds at lower ISO), as is the wonderful Bokeh and shallow focussing. Looking forward to trying this one out on some willing victims.

I loved the idea of capturing your Granny’s house, the shots look great and it would make a really great family hierloom.

Cheers.

I know exactly what you mean – the Docklands area where I live is a really similar mix of old and new. You have the the shiny and funky Grand Canal Square, with all it’s red sticks, and lots of glassy aprtments; turn the corner and you have old stone warehouses and rusty doors. I’m really enjoying snapping it all though…

Really lovely processing on that shot, I love the way all the cracks and grooves on the wall show up.

I didn’t really do all that much with this one. Just a little boost to the contrast with a curves layer, an Anti-Sharp filter (which is what brought out the details in the wall) and a vignette around the edges. Nathalie, I need to go for a walk down around the Docks, I’ve not been in awhile and I’d love to see what they’ve done with the place.

Davy, I hope you’ll be putting some shots up from your new lens!
